Hosting a Writing Challenge-What I Learned

First of all, THANK YOU, to everyone that joined me in this challenge!  Please be sure to check out these lovely blogs!

Thank You to everyone that had the patience to READ my posts in January.  Not all of them were pretty.

When I first came up with the idea of hosting this Writing Challenge, I didn’t really think about how involved it would be.  I simply thought it would be fun and it would be a good way for me to be more disciplined and to write more

I did have fun and I’ve gained a lot of insight and have a lot more respect for those that do this on a regular basis.

Maybe I should have started out with just hosting a weekly challenge instead of one that goes for an entire month!  But no, I had to go big or go home! 🙂

The results of this challenge, for me, produced 22 regular posts (the Number I was shooting for) and 12 promotional/roundups for a total of 34 posts.

Since I put my foot in my mouth and not only came up with this challenge, but set my number at 22 posts, I did feel a sense of pressure to get those posts done.  But, it turns out that I work well under pressure. 🙂  There are a few posts that I did in January, on the spur of the moment, that came out, to me, surprisingly well!

The Penalty I wrote in just a few minutes and didn’t like it when I was done with it, but posted it anyway. Surprisingly, it turned out to be one of my better poems for the month.

Welcome The Light I did not like at all. The idea that I had in my head did not translate to the page. It received a good response to readers, according to the views and comments received.

The Mirror While not liking it when I wrote this, I did end up really liking this piece. This was just a stream of consciousness  piece. I just started writing and this is what came! Maybe I need to do more of this type of writing!

“Holding my feet to the fire”, so to speak, has paid off for me.  But I think that from now on, I will leave hosting a writing challenge to others.  There are many people on WordPress that do this very, very well and the next time I need inspiration, I will seek out one of these awesome people’s blogs.

Writing-The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

Hosting this Challenge this month has taught me to really appreciate those that do this on a regular basis.  It takes a lot more time and dedication than I realized.

With this particular Challenge, I challenged myself to write  a new post 22 times in January.  So far, I’m on target.  BUT, not everything that I’ve written has been a winner.  In my humble opinion, a few were real stinkers. 🙂

People say that to write and write well, you must write a Lot.  The more you write, the better you will get at it.

What do you think?  Is writing like exercising?  You have to use it or lose it?  Do you “practice” writing?

Welcome the Light

Darkness
encompasses the earth

and shrouds
my consciousness

My outlook dismal
in this land

of eternal
darkness

The darkness
lifts

The daylight
returns

I watch the sunrise
and welcome the warmth

I welcome
the light

Name Your Number Writing Challenge

Want to kick start your writing for the new year?  We all need a nudge once in a while.  Here’s my idea of that nudge.  Please join me in this fun challenge.  I am challenging myself, and you, to write a number of posts in the month of January.

YOU name the Number of Posts!

There are 22 workdays in January.  I’m taking the weekends off to catch my breath, or catch up!  I am going to write a post each of those workdays, for a total of 22 posts.  (I will sometimes use the weekends to get a post or two ahead so that I’m not under the gun every day)

22 is my number.  What’s yours?

Day One of this Challenge is Monday, January 2nd.

If you would like to join me in this challenge, here are the “rules”.

  • Your post can be in any form you wish. Essay, photo, short story (500 words max, please) poetry, etc.
  • Please keep the content of your post fairly family friendly.  G or PG rated, please.
  • Your post can be on any subject you wish.
  • Name your Number!  Challenge yourself!  What number of posts do you aspire to?
  • Please create a pingback from your post to this one and use the tag “Name Your Number Writing Challenge” so we can find you.  If you do not know how to create a pingback, Hugh has an excellent tutorial HERE.  You can also leave a link to your post in the comments below.  I moderate the comments on my blog, so you may not see your comment right away.
  • One real “rule” here.  No copies of your past posts or reblogs of others’ posts.  This challenge is to get your writing juices flowing.  So new work only!
  • *Due to the time differences, etc. some posts may overflow into the weekend or the following day. I’m quite flexible on the times, etc.

I will do a Roundup of all the posts we have all done for the week on Sunday.  This is my first time to host a writing challenge, so there will be a learning curve!  Be gentle with me!

So are you ready to challenge yourself?  Please join me!!

Coming Soon – January Writing Challenge

Do you work well under pressure?

In 2021, I participated in the April Poetry writing challenge.  Where you write a poem a day for the month of April.  I took the weekends off, so I didn’t make it every day.  BUT, I ended the month with 20 new poems!

Apparently, when you hold my feet to the fire, I get it done!  🙂  My buddy Chuck, over at The Reluctant Poet was my Accountability Buddy.  It helped to have someone to share the challenge with!

Beginning January 2nd, I will start a Writing Challenge.

In January, I am challenging myself to write 22 new posts, with most of them being poetry.  Why 22?  There are 22 weekdays in January.  I usually take the weekends off, even if I’m not having a hard time writing.  The weekends will give me (and you) a couple of days to get ahead 1 or 2 posts, or to just catch my breath.

Would you join me in this Challenge?  Below is a Sneak Peek at some of the “Rules” for the upcoming challenge:

  • Your post can be in any form you wish. Essay, photo, short story (500 words max, please) poetry, etc.
  • Please keep the content of your post fairly family friendly.  G or PG rated, please.
  • Your post can be on any subject you wish.
  • One real “rule” here.  No copies of your past posts or reblogs of others’ posts.  This challenge is to get your writing juices flowing.  So new work only!

There will be a more detailed list of rules and other information to come!

Stay tuned!
