* I had this phrase running through my head (Just Be Held) and wrote a little something on it. Then afterward I Googled the phrase, thinking that it sounded familiar. Boy, was I ever right! Casting Crowns did a much better job that I did, but I almost plagiarized some of their song without realizing it! Have you ever come close to plagiarizing? Below are the AMAZING lyrics to Just Be Held by Casting Crowns and then my attempt at using the phrase. Enjoy.
Hold it all together
Everybody needs you strong
But life hits you out of nowhere
And barely leaves you holding on
And when you’re tired of fighting
Chained by your control
There’s freedom in surrender
Lay it down and let it go
CHORUS:
So when you’re on your knees and answers seem so far away
You’re not alone, stop holding on and just be held
Your worlds not falling apart, its falling into place
I’m on the throne, stop holding on and just be held
Just be held, just be held
If your eyes are on the storm
You’ll wonder if I love you still
But if your eyes are on the cross
You’ll know I always have and I always will
And not a tear is wasted
In time, you’ll understand
I’m painting beauty with the ashes
Your life is in My hands
CHORUS:
So when you’re on your knees and answers seem so far away
You’re not alone, stop holding on and just be held
Your worlds not falling apart, its falling into place
I’m on the throne, stop holding on and just be held
Just be held, just be held
Lift your hands, lift your eyes
In the storm is where you’ll find Me
And where you are, I’ll hold your heart
I’ll hold your heart
Come to Me, find your rest
In the arms of the God who wont let go
CHORUS:
So when you’re on your knees and answers seem so far away
You’re not alone, stop holding on and just be held
Your worlds not falling apart, its falling into place
I’m on the throne, stop holding on and just be held
Just be held, just be held

*This is what I wrote. 🙂
He just wanted to hold me. I was tattered and torn and I pushed him away, determined to claw my way through. I held on.
He just wanted to hold me. I fought and raged and pushed and stumbled, always with chin up and chest out. I held on.
He just wanted to hold me. Determination blinded me. I ate it for breakfast; choked on it. I held on.
He just wanted to hold me. I clamored and battled again and again. I held on.
Then, I couldn’t go on. I had all I could take. I had nothing left to give.
I stopped Holding On.
Finally, when I had exhausted all hope, he tenderly held me close. He held me as I wept and he held me as I cursed. He held me until my tears ran dry.
I felt my strength return and hope restored within his loving embrace. I was once again strong enough to do battle. I learned something that would carry me into tomorrow and beyond, with unending hope and strength.
Sometimes it’s alright to Stop Holding On and
Just Be Held.

We hear music and read all the time and Rembrandt phrases and words we’ve heard or read. They become memories and sometimes we use them. Your poem is certainly not even close to plagiarism. They are your words, not theirs. And your words are every bit as beautiful as theirs. A lot of my poems are inspired by music… Lyrics and/or titles. Inspired by, not plagiarized.

Thank you Walt. Very sweet of you. I guess I agree, now that it’s been pointed out to me, but I had a twinge of guilt once I realized the phrase was from a song already written. ❤

You’re very welcome. I’m sure that particular phrase has been used in many songs and stories.

I wouldn’t call what you wrote plagiarism but that’s me. Both were good pieces.

Thanks Mike. I am probably overly cautious, but I felt guilty.

Beautiful. Both.
I love Christian music. We have a great Christian radio station, KTIS, based in the Twin Cities and founded by Billy Graham while he was briefly president at the University of Northwestern in St. Paul. I listen to KTIS daily.
