Guarded
Wrapped in chains
created by bouts
of betrayal
Walls built high
and higher still
Overlooking a valley
of deluded dreams
and forgotten covenant
Sweat
Beads along brow
Never ending battle
Fear born of deception
Exhaustion from defense
Defense from pain
Pain from defense

*We work so hard at guarding ourselves against pain that we cause more pain in the process. True, it doesn’t get in, but what else are we keeping out?
This feels like something I could have written after my divorce…It really drew me in because I can relate to each point on such a deep level. Well done!!

Would love ever happen if we always guarded our hearts?

The imagery really does “come alive” –as it ironically points to the empty heart we reap if we build walls that perpetually keep others out.

Penny, this is fantastic! From the picture, to the poem, to the your question at the end, this is a spot-on post that really draws in and makes the reader question their own “thick skin and guarded heart”
