Everyday Heroes

*On this Veteran’s Day, my humble offering of a small tribute to those that serve and those that have served.  Thank you.

This man is a mere mortal of flesh and blood.  The light I see in his eyes is that of an honorable man.

He sees the demons and beasts that few of us see.  He would give his life to slay them.

These beasts are not in the form you would know.  They wear the cloak of innocence.  They are the neighbor next door or the woman at the market.

This man stands at the ready so you can sleep safely in your bed tonight.

He runs toward the demons in our world, not away from them.   There are battles to be fought and demons to slay.

How can we repay the sacrifice?

Sacrifice

I always knew there was something Dark in you.  Then the day came when you revealed your true self.

You didn’t see me hidden in the dark as I followed you.

Your rituals, rehearsed and practiced millions of times.  Would I die for seeing them?

You raise your hands and the people fall silent.  Did I see worship in their eyes?

The danger of my curiosity now realized, I shrank back from the glow of the fire.

You raise your face to the heavens, the fire glow turning your skin crimson.

With a booming voice that I did not recognize, you said “Bring the sacrifice forward!”

Suddenly there were hands on me, pulling me up and dragging me, stumbling, toward the fire.

My curiosity always did get me into trouble.

TenniSandals

I know how odd these cut up tennis shoes must look.  But bear with me and I will explain.

I’ve told you a bit here and there about my childhood and my upbringing.  My mother was the Queen of Frugality.  We wore 2nd hand clothes growing up but sometimes there wasn’t even the money for that.  But my mom made do.

She had 4 kids to clothe, feed and raise.  Most of the time Mom was on her own to accomplish these things.  So she had to get creative.

We were always growing out of our clothes.  To get us through the summer, if our shoes were getting too small, Mom would cut the toes our of our shoes, like in the picture above.  The toes of our too-big-feet would stick out over the end of the shoe.  This was a make shift sandal that my mom created.

For the rough and tumble of childhood play, especially in the summertime, this was a perfect solution that did not cost my mother a dime!

By the fall, somehow, Mom would come up with the money for us to have shoes to start the new school year.  They wouldn’t always be new shoes, but they would be clean and they would fit.

Looking back, it’s a pretty odd thing to do, I suppose.  But back then I never questioned it.  It was just something Mom did.

Ugh! Diet & Exercise :(

Exercise-005

Diet and exercise.  *Shudder*   Just the thought of it makes me cringe!  I HATE to exercise.  And dieting?  Who the hell wants to eat a bunch of stuff they don’t like?  Not me!

Despite all that…..

I’ve started a new diet and exercise program.  It’s been 2 weeks and I’ve lost 8 lbs. so far.   So I’m pretty jazzed.  I want to lose another 12.

The diet really isn’t a diet.  It’s just a change in the way I eat.  For now, I’m having no bread, potatoes, coffee creamer (boo!), fried food, fast food and no processed food.

Eating healthy is a lot more work than not.  I have to actually cook!   Living by myself for the last 5 or 6 years, I cook for myself very little.   It’s a lot easier and quicker to just grab something out of the freezer and nuke it.

But now, I have to plan what I will take in my lunch every day.  I didn’t realize that what was left of my bagged salad had gone bad.  I had planned on having salad with cooked chicken for lunch.  So, instead, I’m having some cooked chicken and carrots.  My afternoon snack will be a Tbsp. of creamy peanut butter.  I also brought along a hard boiled egg in case I get hungry later.

I’ve given up soda and pretty much sugar too.  I am drinking Crystal Light or equivalent and water, lots and lots of water.  I was NEVER a water drinker, but I have found some of the flavored waters on the market that are quite good.

The other night, I had a terrible craving for cereal and milk!  It’s one of my favorite late night snacks.  Lucky Charms of course!  (Don’t judge!)  I didn’t have any milk in the house.  So I finally got up and poured myself ½ cup of cereal and ate it dry.

It was very UNsatisfying!

Exercise.  Oh Lord!  I have never liked to exercise, just for the sake of exercising.  So I started off walking a mile a day.  I am now up to 3 miles a day.  I’ve gotten so that I look forward to it!  The weather here in Texas in the fall is just perfect for walking.  The temps are in the low to mid 70’s right now.  My goal is to reach 5 miles a day.

Now don’t laugh at me!  I bought a Richard Simmons CD to exercise to once the weather turns bad, or if it gets dark before I get my walk in.  I don’t walk alone at night here.  And just for the record I LIKE Richard Simmons!!  So there!   🙂

My new abode needs a LOT of work outside.  The yard is in terrible shape.  I live in the worst looking house in a very nice neighborhood, just because the yard has been so badly neglected.  I spent most of the day on Sunday cleaning up the back yard.  I wish I would have taken a BEFORE picture!

THAT’S the kind of exercise I like.  Where you are doing something you enjoy and you’re getting a workout  at the same time.

The inside of the house is starting to come together now too.  I’ve got some pictures hung up on the walls and more boxes unpacked.

I give myself one day off a week from my new routine.  But I still try not to go crazy, especially with eating.  I can gain 3 lbs. just from a one day food binge!

I’ll keep you posted on my progress!

Modern Day Knight

Image

One day in the dark of the forest, down at the bottom of that deep, dark well, he came to me.

His arms, strong, but tender, raised me from the depths of that well.

The blue of his eyes shone through the night as if the light were coming from within.

I discovered this man was a mere mortal of flesh and blood.  The light I saw in his eyes was that of an honorable man.  The honor this man carried with pride, was that of rare and unimaginable beauty.

I knew he was a man, with weaknesses as men have.  But I saw what was inside.  He was a Nobleman of Old.  He saw the demons and beasts that few of us see.  He would give his life to slay them.

He thought his life was better served on the battlefield.

This man had no sword or armor, as we would normally see with a Knight.   He relied on his instincts and his brethren in the heat of battle.

My hand touched his, one last time, as he turned his shining eyes away.  I knew he couldn’t stay.  He had paused on his quest just long enough to give me a glimpse of himself.  There were battles to be fought and dragons to slay.
