I’m a DIY kind of girl. I’ve had to be. Most of my life, I could not afford to hire someone to do things for me, so I’ve always had the mindset of make do, figure it out on my own. DIY. My mother, bless her heart, taught me to sew before I ever started Home Economics (I don’t think that still exists, does it?) in school. At about the age of 5, she sat me down and taught the art of hand embroidery. I was her shadow in the kitchen, learning to cook. Mom did well at preparing for me for as lot of things in life. Because of this, I’ve never been afraid to tackle something if I thought I could do it. Things didn’t always work out, but I tried. I do know my limitations, most of the time, and if it’s something out of my league, I leave the project to someone else.
I scour the internet and YouTube looking for instructions on how to do things all the time. I recently made my own bar soap. The kind made from lye, the real deal. It turned out lovely and I gifted some at Christmas time. I also tried homemade laundry soap, but I’m still perfecting the recipe. Not so sure about that one. I was taught a couple of very basic crochet stitches and have since taken to YouTube and have followed along teaching myself more. I gift my crocheted projects all the time.
I’ve painted and laid tile. I added shelving in the kitchen, bathroom and garage. It seems as though I’m always tackling a do it yourself project. There is a lot of satisfaction that comes from doing it yourself. Being able to stand back and look at what you’ve accomplished.
The VW Bug above was pictured in a article about DIY gardening. While a lovely thought, I’m afraid that I would just end up with a rusting hulk in my yard. I know my limitations. 🙂
How about you? Do you DIY?

I love DIY, it started off as having to improvise as single mom. Now, DIY, painting and upcycling is my hobby, joy and therapy 😀

I love it! I’m a DIY girl too 🙂 I’ve always love trying to create something out nothing. My mom and I use to pick up stuff the rich people tossed out and then transform it into something we could use.

I am SO not a DIY girl, or a craft girl, or cook, or anything like that. So, I envy those who are. It’s amazing what you types can make and create! I doff my cap to you, Penny 😁

Penny, I’m impressed by all you’ve done. I used to do more with my hands, including sewing. I stitched mostly all my clothes during high school and sewed dresses for my grandma. At some point, while a young mom, I didn’t have time for that any more. But I’m thankful for that skill, taught in home ec, today consumer science (if it’s even offered). In my opinion, schools need to return to offering some of these basic life skills classes.
Keep using your talents and skills to create with your hands. You are a multi-talented woman whom I admire.

I love DIY projects. I’m a lot like you, most of the time growing up if there was something I wanted cost meant try doing it myself. That mind set stuck with me. There’s not much I won’t try.

My DIY skills have always been rudimentary (and were never necessary or requested whilst growing up), but I have my eye on getting better. My goal is to make clothes for my toddler, as they are so expensive. I hope that it will teach him the value of relying on oneself instead of always expecting others to do the hard work!

Since I started writing, my craft work and diy has been sadly neglected. This year though, I am determined to make time for them again, as it was sorely missed…

I hear you. I don’t have nearly the amount of time that I would like to have to do DIY projects. Thanks for the visit!

This is a fun post, Penny. I’ve always had to do everything on my own — never having been blessed with helpful people around me. Hence my ruined back — doing the impossible too many times. I do enjoy the “upcycle” kind of DIY. After moving all the way across the country (for the 3rd time) I’ve been thinking of ways to re-purpose cardboard boxes, rather than just recycle or trash them. There are some very cool ideas for that on YouTube and Pinterest. Not sure I have the cutting skills (or tools)… LOL — limitations. Hugs.

I like upcycling too. I always seem to have some kind of craft project going on. I imagine there are a ton of things to do with cardboard. Thanks for your visit and your kind comment! ❤

You are lucky to have had a mother who taught you so many useful things. My mother was also like this and my grandmother too. I love the flowery buggy.

Thanks, Robbie. Yes, I am lucky. My mom was quite handy herself. She was never afraid to tackle something herself. You and I are both blessed to have had these caring women in our lives. Thanks for visiting, Robbie. ❤
