As some of you know, I bought a house back in September. It now seems like every weekend there is SOME project to be done around the house. This is my latest one.
There is a spot in my kitchen that has open shelving. Well, there is an open metal shelf that I put there. I don’t have a lot of cabinet space in my kitchen and I thought this would be a good solution. You can see a post I did about adding shelving to my cupboards HERE.
At first, I thought that since everything was exposed, I would just store the “pretty” things on that shelf. Well, that idea didn’t last long. The shelves are now a disorganized mess. I can’t stand it. When you walk in my front door, I have a very open floor plan and you see right into the kitchen and my messy shelves. This will not do!
So I searched and searched online for the perfect cabinet to put in this space. I found one! Sort of. All of my kitchen cabinets are white. So I wanted a white cabinet to go in that space. Nope. Couldn’t find one. As close as I could come was a 1970’s almond-colored one. Yuck. The picture above will show the almond colors in some spots after I got the cabinet assembled.
Since this almond colored cabinet was as close as I could get to what I wanted, I figured that I would just paint it white. No big deal, right? Ha!!
After several hours in the garage, (letting it dry between coats) my hands and wrists cramping from holding the spray paint can, I had my cabinet pieces painted. I waited until the next day to assemble it.
The next day came and after 2 plus hours, I had assembled what you see in the picture above.
Obviously, there were parts that I did not get painted. I thought these would be parts that would not show once assembled. That’s what I get for thinking!! 🙂
I was NOT going to take the cabinet apart to paint the pieces that I had missed, so I went over those with paint and brushes by hand. I wanted the top to have extra coats on it anyway. So it worked out. Below is what the finished cabinet looks like.
The cabinet is still sitting in my living room. I just did not have the energy to empty the open shelving, move this one and then organize everything again.
I am Very pleased with how the cabinet turned out. I’ll do an update once it’s actually in place.
So this is my weekly smile!! I am loving working on my little house and making everything just the way I want it! Although it’s a lot of work, I am also having a wonderful time!

Oh, Penny, this turned out beautifully. I like the texture on the front. And I’m also admiring that vintage writer’s desk to the right of your cabinet.

Looks nice. Doing stuff like this around the house is always satisfying. Can’t wait to see the sequel when it is in place.
