Character Development

“Oh, Geeze!  She’s at it again!” said Tall Dark Man.

“I know!  I thought the last time was the worst!  There’s no telling what she’ll come up with this time!”  cried Small, Frail, Woman.  “I found my husband’s body at the foot of the cellar steps!”

“Well, I had the grandest time!  I was swept away in a wonderful romance!” gushed Tall, Shapley, Beauty.

“She always picks YOU for those!”  spat Small, Frail, Woman, as she shot evil looks back at Shapley Beauty.

“I was lost in the woods, being chased by wolves the last time she used me!”  whimpered Small, Dirty, Boy.

Older Man spoke out “Calm down, calm down!  You don’t know what will happen this time!  None of us do!

Suddenly, among them appeared a Large, Muscular Man.  Almost in unison, they all let out a small gasp of surprise.

“Well, a new character!” said Older Man.

The group then leaned in a little closer peering at Large Muscular Man.  He blinked at them and said “Wha… what are you looking at?”

“We want to see what you’ll become!”  said Frail Woman.

At that, Muscular Man’s hair started to grow longer and darkened.  It ended just below his shoulders, pulled back into a pony tail.  His shirt, a very plain white cotton, changed to a flannel, red one with checks. The top several buttons were undone.  His Chinos became blue jeans, although clean, were worn and frayed.  He grew before their eyes.  He towered over them by several inches.

Muscular Man, looked down at himself; at his arms and legs.  “What’s happening to me?!” he bellowed.

“Character Development” said Shapley Beauty in a matter-of-fact tone.

Looking back at her, Muscular Man saw that Shapley Beauty was changing too.  Her hair, now dark, was becoming lighter and lighter.  The length was cropped instead of the usual long flowing locks.  Her glamorous gown was becoming skin-tight Daisy Duke short shorts and she had on a small string bikini top.  Looking down at herself, Shapley Beauty’s bosom suddenly grew to almost twice its normal size.

“Holy Cripes!!  Look at these, will ya!  She’s really out done herself this time.” said Shapley Beauty, laughing as she cupped her breasts.

Frail Woman, looked at her, narrowing her eyes and just said “Humpfh!!”  snorting a little as she did and crossing her arms in front of her as if to hide her own tiny bosom.

Tall & Dark leered at Shapley Woman and Small Boy just looked uncomfortable as he shifted from one foot to the other.

Just beyond the little group, a white wall seemed to separate.  At first just a little and then more and more.

Shapely Beauty and Muscular Man were being pulled, as if by an invisible hand, toward that opening.

“Yippee!  Here I go!” cheered Shapley Beauty

“What’s happening to me?” cried Muscular Man.

Shapely Beauty grabbed him by the arm and crooned at him “Don’t you worry honey, you just stay with me.  We’re gonna have some fun!”

They both slid closer and closer to the opening in the white wall.  The wind picked up as if to help sweep them along.  Shapley’s hair was swirling around her and she was cackling giddily.  Muscular’s eyes were like saucers.  He leaned back, but allowed himself to be pulled forward.

They were pulled into the opening and then with a loud “WHOOSH!” the opening closed.

It was quiet again among the little group.

Frail Woman, shoulders slumped, walked away from the group and plopped herself down on a bench.  Dirty Boy, scurried over next to her and took her arm as if for comfort and leaned against her.

Older Man slowly walked over to Frail Woman and put a hand on her shoulder.  “Maybe the next story sweetheart.  Maybe the next story.”

  1. Cute and clever and too often true – we sometimes do tend to use cliches. So in the next story, Frail Woman rescues Dirty Boy, meets his father, Professional Man With Feelings But Not a Wimp, who was widowed years ago, and they fall in love and marry, with PMWFBNaW being a very happy and content Older Man at the end of the story, Dirty Boy having grown into Muscular Man and Frail Woman still now a new character, Happy Woman 😉
