An Introvert Is NOT…

An introvert is Not

Most people, when they hear the word Introvert, have preconceived ideas about what that means. I want to tell you what it does NOT mean.

It does NOT mean that an Introvert is shy. –

An introvert may not talk a lot with people they do not know. But this has nothing to do with being shy. An introvert is an observer. They need to ease into the water slowly. At a social function, they may hang back, or stick with someone they know in order to feel comfortable. Once comfortable, an introvert may end up being the life of the party, the center of attention!

It does NOT mean that an Introvert is sad. –

An introvert is not only quiet, but enjoys “me” time and needs solitude. Because of this, people think we are sad or depressed. This is not true. We simply need the world to be a little quieter and less crowded than other people do.

It does NOT mean that an Introvert is timid. –

Don’t let the quiet demeanor of an introvert fool you. They are not necessarily timid. An introvert can be Momma-Bear-mean when threatened. An introvert can also cut loose and party down when in the mood.

It does NOT mean that an Introvert is Anti-Social. –

You know who I’m talking about. There is always that one family member that does not show up for family functions, or the friend that turns you down again for that lunch date. The introvert does not mean to be anti-social. It’s just that sometimes; interaction with other people is just Too Much for an Introvert to bear.

It does NOT mean that an Introvert is bored. –

If we hang back in a crowd or don’t join in a conversation right away, this doesn’t mean we are bored. Quite the opposite is true. Our brains are taking in everything around us, digesting it, analyzing it.

What an Introvert IS

An introvert is someone that prefers solitary activities, as opposed to activities that require social interaction. We still crave the company of other people. But introverts are drained by too much of it. Small groups or one on one interaction is best. Many of us would rather express ourselves in writing than verbally.

Don’t misjudge the introverts of the world. We are actors, teachers, salesmen, postal carriers, waitresses, astronauts and bartenders. Just because we prefer less social interaction doesn’t mean we can’t handle it. Introverts are stronger than you think.

** A little clarification. An introvert can be sad or depressed or etc. But this does not Define us. This is NOT who we are.

  1. I agree with this awesome post! I’m an outgoing introvert so people tend to think I’m an extrovert, and then they get confused when I decline to go to [insert some huge crowd place]. 😆
