What a Mess!


It seems that with my off again, on again process of writing, I now have 4 versions of my novel.  What have I done? !!

The original version has some really great parts, but a weak back story.  So I started the novel over again from scratch!

Enter version #2.

This version has taken a completely different route from the original.  While having the same End Idea as the original, the route it has taken getting there is much darker than I care for.

At some point along the way, I started with a version that was saved from something previous.  I opened the wrong document when I started to write and I created version #3.

After vowing to Just Write The Damned Story, I’ve been making pretty good progress on my novel.  But I have discovered that I made the same error, opening the Wrong Damned Document.

So NOW I have 4 flipping versions of my novel!! Every version is just a little bit different, because every time I would sit down to write, I would just take off from the last sentence on the screen.  I never seem to go down the same path twice.

How to fix it?  I’ve been really frustrated about this the last couple of days.  I’ve got a lot of work involved in this mess.  But I think I’ve come up with a solution.

I’ve gone through and carefully looked at each version and renamed them Versions #1, #2, etc.  This should eliminate future confusion.  I think now I can copy and paste into a Master Version.  I hope.

It sounds like a good idea in theory.

  1. Yikes. I’m sure you’ll get them all together! I’m easy, I just use one file on Scrivener. And I write from chapter one to the end. I don’t do scenes here and there or this bit then that bit. I have to write like I read or it just doesn’t make sense to me!

  2. Take heart! I read recently that Jack Kerouac lost his manuscript and was so frustrated he wrote the entire story of ON THE ROAD, in one (state unknown) sitting on a single roll of paper….. at least that is what I remember…

  3. Ugh, yeah I’ve definitely done that before. I found that using notecards to create the initial outline, then typing the outline in a Word document, helps keep me organized. I check off each chapter I finished so I know where I left off and where I need to go. Halfway through my novel, I decided to change directions, so I took out my notecards and reworked the ending. I feel like the notecards actually helped my creative flow.

    Don’t stress about it too much! Going through each draft a few times is only going to help make an even more awesome manuscript. 🙂

  4. When I’m working on a book, I start each day by creating a new file with the date in the title (i.e., open the file, immediately click “Save As”). Yes, that means hundreds of files. Then I do the same for the second, third, fourth and fifth draft… I only have two that’s made it to the second draft, but i know the other two I’ve written will go the same route.
